Architecture

The dual curves of this solar hemicycle, constructed with commercial concrete blocks and Honduran mahogany, compliment the gentle slope of the midwestern landscape accentuated by impeccable gardens. The approach is unassuming and once inside, the view revealed by the two story, floor to ceiling windows demonstrates the brilliance of this spectacular design - at once intimate and open, it is truly connected to its surroundings.

One of four homes designed for the Galesburg Country Homes, the Meyer House sits on one circular acre with common areas shared according to the Usonian ideas of community Wright helped develop. The contemporary owners association struggles to function according to these original concepts and disputes have threatened the historical designation of the property.

Usonian Design

This grouping developed in the lines of Wright’s Usonian style and his belief that the home should suit and nurture the people who occupied it. Usonian architecture developed after the Great Depression when architects like Wright sought to make customized affordable housing available to everyone.

Compression and Release Style

The Meyer house in particular is a prime example of his compression and release style which is evident as one enters the home through a set of stairs that turns through the drum shape of the building before releasing into the open space of the dining and living area.
